This question, “who are you,” is not meant for you to directly answer but instead for you to explore. I pose this question to my Tribe in support and encouragement of our self-awareness and well-being. This is not a question that can be easily answered anyways. For those with already prepared broad generalizations, I challenge you to look deeper into the question. Most of you might lead with your name and various titles, occupation, and talents; but are we not more than our titles, occupations, and talents? I see us as more complex and multifaceted beings than just the characteristics represented by our roles and titles. Who we are also includes our wants, desires, and lifestyles.
The great and legendary Reggae Artist Beanie Man has a hit song titled, “Who am I,” in which he vehemently proclaims, “the girls dem sugar!” In another hit song he proclaims himself to be “The King of Dancehall.” In yet another hit song he proclaims himself to be, “a gangster for life, a real bad man.” Love it or leave it, is it not his to proclaim? Beanie Man’s songs are but loose examples to support my belief that we are many things. So what do you proclaim about yourself? Who are you, really? Let’s talk about it!
We cannot discuss the legendary Beanie Man and not share at least one his great hits. Your welcome!
Who Did/Do You Want To Be?
When I was a little girl I wanted to be an artist. I loved writing, rapping, creating music, playing instruments, and watching movies. I saw myself traveling the world, meeting amazing people, and living an adventurous life. That didn’t happen exactly as planned and its ok for you to laugh about it, but pity not. As you can see, I am in some ways living out my childhood dreams, albeit on a much smaller scale. I do presently engage in at least some of the interests I had always loved as a child. But knowing my interests does not entirely answer the question of who I am. All the things that I like, do, or engage in aren’t all that I am. What about how I treat others, how I treat myself, or how I see myself? Shouldn’t that matter also? Answering the question of Who we are should also include how we are. What do you think?
Here are some questions to consider when exploring the question, “Who am I?”
1. Who do you want to be?
2. How would you describe your character?
3. How would you describe your personality?
4. If money was not an issue, what would you do? Where would you be?
5. What are your interests?
6. What’s your favorite thing to do?
7. How are you around others?
8. What matters a lot to you?
9. What do you dislike or hate?
10. What things are you good at? Great at?
11. What things do you want to be great at?
12. Do you care what others think?

Why Does Knowing Who You Are Even Matter?
Answering the question, “Who am I,” is a good mindfulness practice to help keep us true to ourselves, and staying true to ourselves helps us to live a happier life. As we mature and experience life our interests, needs, and desires may change. It’s important to check in with ourselves to see where we are in our journey. That's self care. That's self love!
