Did You Know?

Excessive Social Media Use is Bad for You, Let's Talk About it!

Did you know that excessive social media use can negatively impact your sleeping patterns and increase depression? It is also found to be distracting, exposes people to cyber-bullying, peer pressure, and unrealistic views of people. Teens especially suffer from these side effects of excessive social media use. The media, education systems, and programs across America have done their fair share in getting the word out to the public about the negative affects social media is having on the youth population, particularly as it relates to bullying and peer pressure.

What is equally concerning is the affect that social media has on adults. Americans spent on average more than 1,300 hours on social media last year. In addition to social media apps, the study found that members of Gen-Z spend a shocking nine hours per day in front of a screen.

Unlike with the teen and youth populations, I have not seen much information presented to the public on the negative affects social medias has on adults. I have seen social media diet fads that elude to people recognizing that they may be overindulging; but I have not seen anything to imply that its over usage per se' has contributed to antisocial behavior, increased depression, increased aggression, and anxiety.

Self awareness is the key to being able to recognize if you are spending too much time on social media or not. Be honest with yourself and if you don't like what you see, make the necessary change. Set goals for yourself and commit to seeing them through. Besides, there's so much life to live outside of a virtual world. Live loud and proud!

Remember to commit daily to caring for and loving yourself, no matter what. We here at The Let’s Talk Tribe are rooting for your continued success.

Always With Love,

The Let's Talk Tribe Team
